Dryland Agriculture. Indian agriculture is predominantly a rainfed agriculture under which both dryfarming and dryland agriculture are included. Out of the million ha of total cultivated area in the country, million ha (i.e. nearly 70 percent) area are rainfed. The book provides a wholesome insight into mechanization of dryland agriculture in India. Mechanization needs, design criteria, manufacturing technology, extension through industry and custom hiring centres, use of information technology, agro-business etc are important issues covered in addition to technical, industrial, social, economic.
Abstract. Rainfed agriculture is used to describe farming practices that rely solely on precipitation for water. Although dryland farming is a part of rainfed farming, it occurs primarily in semiarid areas where annual precipitation is generally less than 25–50 % of the potential evapotranspiration demands. Rainfed agriculture encounters several constraints on account of climatic, edaphic, and social factors. Out of the 97 million farm holdings, about .
This book provides a comprehensive presentation of the realization of improved rainfed agriculture yield in semi-arid and dry land areas. The incentive of watershed programs is to increase the return on investment with over 20% for 65% of the projects that are currently underperforming. Dryland farming is a special case of rainfed agriculture practiced in arid and semiarid regions in which annual precipitation is about 20–35% of potential evapotranspiration. Conditions of moderate-to-severe moisture stress occur during a substantial part of the year, greatly limiting yield potential, and in which farming emphasizes water.
Ratna Reddy, Geoffrey J. Syme, in Integrated Assessment of Scale Impacts of Watershed Intervention, Background. Rainfed agriculture accounts for more than 75% of the cropped area in the world. One-third of the developing world’s population lives in the less-favored rainfed regions [1].In India, rainfed agriculture accounts for 60% of the cropped area, and is the food basket for.
Dry Land Farming. Indian agriculture is traditionally a system of Rainfed agriculture. Out of million hectares of net cropped area, about 72% is Rainfed production about 45% of food grains and 75 – 80% of pulses and oil – seeds and a number of important industrial crops.
Suggested Book. Difference b/w Dryland farming and rainfed farming: Dryland farming Dry land farming is cultivation of crops in regions with annual rainfall of more than mm. Inspite of prolonged dry spells, crop failure is relatively less frequent.
The dynamics of dryland farming are different and harsh than irrigated farming. So the problems of dryland agriculture are also unique. Water is the chief requirement for cropping.
The crops in dryland or arid lands have to face the challenge of shortage of water more frequently. Rainfall is the sole option for them to get water. Dry land agriculture 1. Dryland agriculture Growing of crops entirely under rainfed condition is known as dryland agriculture.
Depending on the amount of rainfall received, dryland agriculture can divided into three categories: 1. The chapters of the book have been selected and arranged in such a manner as to lead the students through the entire gamut of rainfed agriculture supported by suitable examples and diagrams.

Dryland farming constitutes about 72 per cent of the total cropped area of million hectares (Mha) in India contributing to about 42 per cent of total food production (Reddy, ).
Almost entire coarse grains and about 75 per cent of oil. Dryland farming: In dryland Pulses, oilseeds, coarse grain crops and cotton are mainly cultivated. Some technologies are used to increase crop production in drylands and these technologies are also increases the agricultural productivity.
High production of pulses and oilseeds leads to increase in the economic status of the farmers. Rainfed. Dryland agriculture refers to cultivation of crops entirely under natural rainfall without irrigation. It is a form of subsistence farming in the regions where deficit of the soil moisture retards the growth of water consuming crops like rice (Oryza sativa), sugarcane etc.
